Hey Reader Before we get into this week's newsletter, I just wanted to give you an invitation to the challenge we're running at the moment ๐ We've been calling it "3 Months to Change Your Life" (or I've just been calling it CYL for short ๐) but the long-story-short is every participant has picked at least one thing they want to work on or improve over July - September that will have a positive impact on their life. It's been so great to see people already having positive results even though we've only been going for 4-5 days. Weโre only a few days in at this point which means there are still over 12 weeks to make genuine, meaningful progress toward the life you want to create. Whether you want to focus on health, wealth, relationships, or any other area of your life, this challenge is here to get you creating momentum ๐ช We'd love to have you with us! Back to our regularly scheduled broadcast ๐One of the biggest things that holds me back in my goal-getting is feeling like I don't have enough information. I'd love to get started with exercise, but I don't know the best ones yet
I'd love to declutter my house, but I don't have the ideal strategy yet
I'd love to build my finances, but I don't know what my retirement plan is yet
I'd love to eat healthier, but I don't have the perfect meal plan yet
As a person who loves planning, I all too readily fall into the mindset of needing the perfect plan for a goal before I take any action. I want every single step planned out in full so that I can make perfect, linear progress towards my goal. But honestly, when I finally finish my supposedly perfect plan and get started on the goal, usually the reality of working on it looks a lot different ๐ That's assuming I finish the perfect plan at all! So many goals get stuck in the planning stage and never see meaningful progress. That's not going to be us any more though, so what are we going to do differently? ๐ The idea - You don't need all the information to get startedWhile research and information can be hugely helpful for planning our goals, feeling like we need all of it can stop us from really getting started. Typically, this isn't where we want our goal-getting to end. There's another, much better outcome we have in mind. When we convince ourselves we need to know everything before we can begin, โresearchโ starts getting used as a form of procrastination. Oftentimes this comes from the fear of messing up (or what I like to call FOMU). We tell ourselves weโre being productive researching to make our "perfect plan" when really weโre just avoiding the scarier part ๐ซข taking action. Rather than getting perfect clarity on how we're going to achieve something, what we actually need is:
By getting clear about the outcome we want from our goal, it helps to safeguard us from wasting our time on actions that aren't taking us in the right direction. Combining this with doing only enough research to plan the next 1 or 2 action steps will get us way closer to that outcome than obsessing over a perfect plan would. I call this the "minimum viable research" approach; essentially only allowing your goal-related research to extend as far as helping you plan your next action step ๐ช Plus, as we actually start to work on our goals, we're going to learn from experience rather than learning based on expectations. Any plans we make after taking some action are going to be better informed because of it. All this to say, we don't need to start with a perfect plan to make progress on our goals possible. Let's take actionIf you have a goal you feel like you've stalled out on, ask yourself whether this is because you feel like you don't have enough information to get started. The challenge here is to take only 5 - 10 minutes of dedicated research to plan what your next action step is going to be. Make sure it's a step that isn't just more research! We want to end up with tangible progress towards your goal. Once you've taken that step though, then it's just a rinse and repeat process of doing the minimum viable research and taking another action step.
